Ciril GROUP - Business Geografic at the "Map Pedagogy" Exhibition: Confluences - Interdisciplinarity and new challenges in the history of cartography

From July 1 to 5, 2024, the Bibliothèque Universitaire de Lyon 3 will host the "Pedagogy of the Map" exhibition, a major event within the framework of the International Conference on the History of Cartography (ICHC). This prestigious event will bring together 300 researchers from around the world to explore the theme "Confluences - Interdisciplinarity and New Challenges in the History of Cartography".

Lyon 3 University, with the support of the City of Lyon and the Gadagne Museum, has called on Ciril GROUP, a Lyon-based software publisher, and Business Geografic, our division specialized in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to enrich this exhibition with our expertise and international reputation in cartographic technologies. This invitation reflects not only our central role in Lyon's cartography, but also our long-standing relationship with the University.

The exhibition will showcase two cartographic projects created by students at Lyon 3 University using our GEO solutions.

The first project, a map of Lyon's cool spots, was developed with the support of the city of Lyon, in response to the challenges of climate change and the well-being of residents. The students used our GEO tool to identify and map cool areas in Lyon, crucial to improving the comfort of citizens and tourists during periods of high heat. This initiative is part of a proactive approach to urban adaptation to current and future climate challenges.

The second project involved the georeferencing of old postcards from the Musée Gadagne's DUFIER collection. For seven weeks, two students from Lyon 3 University worked on this project, with the help of Business Geografic to build the GEO application. The end result is a dynamic cartography displaying old postcards at a single point, in comparison with current photos. The cartography shows the precise orientation of the original shot, allowing users to immerse themselves in the history of Lyon.

These projects perfectly illustrate the confluence of knowledge and technology, highlighting our significant contribution to interdisciplinarity and new challenges in the history of cartography. Ciril GROUP - Business Geografic is proud to participate in the ICHC and share our expertise to enrich the "Pedagogy of the map" and promote cartographic innovation in Lyon and beyond.
