Partnership with IGN around iTowns

Published on March 28, 2023

Saint-Mandé, March 28, 2023 - iTowns, an open source project for digital twins and 3D modeling applications, is strengthening its community of contributors.

iTowns is an open source development library for designing web-based applications for visualizing and interacting with 2D and 3D geographic data. Currently developed mainly by IGN and Ciril GROUP, now associated in partnership, iTowns is opening up to other contributing partners, both private and public, to become an essential technological building block for BIM and digital twin services.

iTowns, released under an open license (Cecill-B V1.0 and MIT), is one of the public utility commons developed by IGN and its partners to support public policies in a reliable and efficient way. iTowns is a solution for representing and manipulating the growing pool of open data describing the territory in the context of the challenges of ecological and climate change: 3D Lidar data, vector modeling of buildings, aerial and spatial images, immersive "street" or Panoramax views, but also more diffuse data: pollution, weather, etc.

Today, the IGN, which has been committed to building digital commons since 2021, and which shared its vision at the "Communs : d'utilité publique" day on January 17, and Ciril GROUP, a software publisher and Cloud hosting provider specializing in innovative GIS, are joining forces and forming a partnership around iTowns to upgrade the cartographic visualization engine to high 2D/3D/BIM (Building Information Modeling) standards.

This partnership is open and will be extended to all players wishing to contribute to the iTowns dynamic. The community of iTowns contributors is destined to grow stronger to guarantee its excellence and enable it to become a powerful tool for visualizing and interacting with a variety of geographic data to better understand today's major challenges.

At the forthcoming BIM World trade show, to be held on April 05 and 06 at Paris - Porte de Versailles on the theme of digital twins, IGN and Ciril GROUP will be jointly presenting the iTowns project's approach to expansion and openness. Visitors to the show will be able to discover examples of applications built on iTowns, learn about its future prospects, and understand how the community of contributors works.
